Asylum: A 24 year-old Ethiopian female who had been arrested, beaten and tortured by the government authorities repeatedly for participating in lawful political activities fled to the U.S. Upon arriving in the U.S. she suffered a severe mental breakdown which left her depressed, isolated and unable to care for herself much less seek a means of regularizing her visa which had expired.
After several years in the U.S. she recovered and began to receive medical care. She then filed for political asylum at a local Immigration and Naturalization Asylum Office and was denied because she had not filed her claim within one year of her arrival to the U.S. She was then referred to Immigration Court for Deportation/Removal Proceedings.
At this point, she retained our services and we represented her in Immigration Court where we successfully argued that despite the lapse in time that she should be allowed to file her asylum petition. Thereafter, we filed and obtained an approval of her asylum petition.
